Polytrichum formosum

Moosflowers (perichaetium) of Polytrichum formosum

Previous Index Next

On this picture one looks on top of a cushion of the moss "Polytrichum formosum". The yellowish "moss flowers" consist of special leaves, which envelop the gametangiophores, in which the reproductive cells develop. Such leaves are called "perichaetial leaves", and the envelope formed by it "perichaetium".

The brown capsules belong to another moss-species - probably Atrichum undulatum.

Some more informations on the genus Polytrichum (only in german) can be found on my homepage.
