Everybody knows this plant: The larch (Larix decidua). It is characterized by its perennial short shouts with many needles, that can be seen on the picture.
The european species is a typical plant of the high mountains, but is often reafforested and can now be found nearly everywhere. Another species of the genus forms huge forests in Siberia. The wood of those plants is extremely durable and often taken for constructions, sleepers or even for water pipes.
The picture shows a horizontal, probably two-year-old branch. I took it in june 2000 on the Teufelsley near Ahrbrück upon the Ahr.
