In autumn 1939 my grandfather Fritz Becker was called up for a military exercise near Cologne. But what was said to be an exercise in reality was the second World War, and it should last 6 years, until he finally came back home for more than a few days.
This picture shows him on the very left, standing at his first deployment near Trier at the border to Luxembourg. He worked as air traffic observer, i.e. had to distinguish between own and enemy airplanes with binoculars.
